NIE Number and TIE Card in Spain: What Every Indian Traveller Needs to Know

If you've started looking into moving to Spain from India, you've already seen the words NIE and TIE everywhere. And then they just keep showing up in every checklist and application guides. For Indian travellers, this is one of the most common points of confusion in the entire Spain immigration process. And it makes sense, because there's not enough explanation of what either actually means or which one you need first.

The NIE is your tax identification number in Spain and TIE is your residency card. One is a number. The other is a card. And while the TIE actually contains your NIE on it, getting them are two entirely separate processes with their own forms, fees, and appointments.

If you're moving to Spain on any long-term visa, you will need both. Understanding how NIE Number and TIE Card work and in what order to get them is one of the most important things you can do before you land. Keep reading!

An NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero. It is a permanent, unique tax and identification number assigned to non-Spanish citizens by the Spanish National Police, through the department that oversees immigration and border control. It’s required for any Indian who wants to carry out legal, financial, or professional activities in Spain. The NIE certificate is not your visa and having it does not mean you legally have permission to live or work in Spain. It just means you are registered in their system.

To understand it in a better way, you can think of an NIE in Spain like your PAN Card in India, but specifically for foreigners. It is a unique, alphanumeric number that stays with you for life. 

What Does an NIE Number Look Like? 

An NIE number is a 9-character string that follows a very specific format, a letter at the beginning (X, Y, Z), seven numbers, and then a letter at the end.

Why is the Use of an NIE Number in Spain? 

Just like you cannot buy a car, open a bank account, or rent an apartment easily in India without your PAN, you cannot do much in Spain without an NIE. You will need it to:

• Open a bank account in Spain (almost no bank will open one without it)
• Receive a salary or sign an employment contract.
• Buy, sell, or rent a house.
• Get a mobile SIM card or internet connection for your home.
• Pay taxes or file a Spanish tax return.
• Set up a business or register as an autónomo (self-employed)
• Get admission in a university or college.
• Purchase a car or any vehicle
• Any other significant financial transactions

At the end of the day, if you plan to spend any meaningful time in Spain or have financial ties to the country, you will need an NIE. 

The TIE stands for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, which means Foreigner's Identity Card. It is a credit-card-sized plastic biometric ID card that acts as your official proof of legal residence in Spain.  

If the NIE is like a PAN card, the TIE is more like an Aadhaar card that combines your identification number with your biometric data (photo and fingerprints.) The TIE card contains your NIE number on it, along with your:

• Full name and date of birth
• Nationality
• Type of residence authorization
• Validity/expiry date
• Fingerprints (stored in the chip)

Do I Need a TIE Card in Spain?

As an Indian citizen, yes, you need a TIE card if you intend to stay in Spain for longer than 6 months. If you are entering on a Student Visa, Family Reunification Visa, Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), or Work Permit, getting your TIE is your final, mandatory step to solidify your legal status.

If you are only in Spain as a tourist for up to 90 days on a Schengen visa, you do not need a TIE card, but you may still need an NIE for a property purchase or financial transaction.

Benefits of a TIE Card in Spain 

• It acts as your official government ID while living in Spain; you don’t have to carry your physical Indian passport everywhere.
• It allows you to travel freely throughout the Schengen Zone as TIE holders are exempt from additional biometric scans at the border.
• Landlords and banks recognize it immediately, simplifying your banking, rentals, and contracts needs.
• It proves your right to work to Spanish employers
• It helps you register for public health coverage at your local health center and get access to GP services, specialists, hospital care, and prescriptions at subsidized rates.
• Allows you to register to the Spanish Social Security system, unlocking unemployment benefits, sick/maternity/paternity leaves, pensions, and accident coverage.
• It is a prerequisite for sponsoring family members through reunification.

The confusion between NIE and TIE card terminology is the number one hurdle for Indian applicants. For understanding the simple distinction between the two, you can check the table below:

Can I Apply for a Spanish NIE Online?

You cannot complete the entire application online independently. You can only fill out the required forms digitally, but you need to be physically present to submit them to the consulate.

If for some reason you cannot visit a consulate in person, you can hire a specialized legal service or lawyer as your representative, either in Spain or in India. They can process everything for you digitally. For this, they'll have you notarize a Power of Attorney online, which basically allows them to submit the application and collect the NIE on your behalf. And this is the closest thing to a "fully online" experience for you personally.

Documents Required for NIE Application 

• EX-15 Form completed and signed by you or your representative.
• Proof of reason and evidence for the NIE application, such as buying a property, paying taxes, etc.
• Valid original passport, along with the photocopy of the bio-data page.
• Representative's ID or passport and duly signed power of attorney (if hired.)
• Proof of residence/registered address in Spain.
• Filled Modelo 790 Code 012 and corresponding fee paid at a bank beforehand.

Applying from India (Before You Leave) 

As an Indian applicant of the DNV, obtaining the NIE certificate is a mandatory step before initiating the actual application process. Nevertheless, you need an NIE irrespective of the visa type, and it's best to get it done before leaving India to avoid the long procedures and waiting lines in Spain.

In India, you can apply for an NIE number through the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai (via their outsourcing partner, BLS International). The NIE will be sent to your email address, so it’s mandatory to provide the details on the application form. The fee to get your NIE through the consulate in India is set at Rs. 877. 

How to Get NIE in Spain (If You are Already There) 

In Spain, NIE applications are handled by the Oficinas de Extranjería (Foreigners' Office) or the Comisarías de Policía Nacional (National Police stations.) This is how the process works:

How long does it take to get an NIE number? 

It usually takes around 2 to 3 weeks, but this can extend due to peak season, high application volume, public holidays, or any other unavailable factors.

What if the NIE Appointment is Not Available in Spain?

It’s not uncommon to be unable to find appointment slots for NIE in Spain. It’s actually a near-universal experience among Indian expats. Although there’s no single strategy that will guarantee the availability of an appointment, there are a few things you can do that have helped many travellers to some extent:

• The online portal frequently releases new batches of appointments, and most of them are made available on Monday mornings between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Keep checking the site.
• Some provinces randomly release cancelled slots on Wednesday and Thursday mornings around the same time.
• You do not always have to get your NIE in the exact city where you are staying. If you are in Barcelona or Madrid city center and finding nothing, look for appointments in smaller towns within that province.
• You can hire a third-party agency or a lawyer in Spain. They can legally handle the application and pick up the certificate on your behalf. There are even specialized online services that can process this remotely for you.

Once you arrive in Spain, the clock starts ticking. You must submit your application for the physical TIE card in person within 30 days of your entry into the country (or from the date your residency authorization becomes effective).

You will need to submit your application to the Documentation Unit of the National Police, located either at the local Foreigners' Office or the designated Police Station in the specific province of Spain where you are living.  

Step 1: Book Your Spain TIE Card Appointment 

Request your appointment or Cita Previa using the official appointment portal: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/icpplus

Getting an appointment can be very difficult, especially in major hubs like Madrid, Barcelona, or Valencia. It is one of the biggest headaches we've seen among Indian expats there. Don’t be surprised if your appointment is scheduled for weeks after you requested it.

And it's very common for the system to continuously show “no appointment available” during peak seasons. In this case, you have to be patient and keep checking the portal every day. New slots can be made available randomly at any point. 

Step 2: Pay the Fee

You must download and fill out Form 790 Code 012 online, print it out, and take it to almost any physical bank in Spain to pay the processing fee. This will range from €12 to €22, based on your nationality and certain other situations. The bank will stamp your paper as proof of payment. Do not lose this stamped receipt!  

Step 3: Show Up With The Required Documents on Appointment Day 

On the day of your appointment, you must bring:

• Your valid and original Indian passport, along with photocopies of the main page, visa sticker, and entry stamp.
• Your visa or approved work/residence permit.
• Completed and signed Application Form EX-17.
• The stamped Form 790-012 proof of fee payment.
• A recent passport-sized photo on a white background.
• Your Empadronamiento certificate, which is the proof of your address registration in Spain.
• Proof of your registration with the Spanish Social Security, if applicable.

What is Empadronamiento? 

It means registering your home address with your local town hall or Ayuntamiento in Spain. It is one of the most important administrative steps for anyone living in Spain. Once you're registered, you get a certificado de empadronamiento (proof of registration) that proves your residence in Spain. You'll need this certificate for almost everything, including getting or renewing your TIE card.

Step 4: Get Your Physical TIE Card 

At the appointment, the police will take your digital fingerprints and issue a temporary paper receipt called a Resguardo de Solicitud. It serves as your legal ID while your card is being printed. Keep it safe.

• Collection Timeline: It takes 30 to 45 days for the card to be minted. You need to return to the same office to collect your physical plastic TIE card by presenting your Resguardo and passport.
• TIE Card Spain Validity: Your card will match the exact validity of your visa or residence permit.

Tip For Indian Travellers: If you are coming to Spain on a long-term basis, like studying, working, opening a business, or anything else that requires you to stay for more than 90 days, you can apply directly for the TIE. Your physical TIE card will be issued with your NIE mentioned on it, so there’s no need to apply for two separate processes.

If your TIE card is reaching its expiry date, it means your visa is also about to expire. So you need to renew your visa or residency permit first. Once your initial residency has been extended, like you are continuing your university studies or renewing a work contract, then you can start the renewal process of your TIE card. It’s best to renew it 60 days before or up to 90 days after your card expires.

What is the process for renewing? 

The entire process is similar to what you did while applying for the TIE card in the first place. You have to book a fresh appointment with the local Foreigners' Office or the designated Police Station, pay the fee, and bring all updated documents. You also need to bring your current (about to expire) TIE card to the appointment. A fresh set of fingerprints will be taken and then your new TIE card will be issued. 

Once you have your NIE and TIE, the Spanish Digital Certificate is the next thing you should get. Almost everything mentioned above, like filing taxes, checking social security contributions, renewing permits, can be done online if you have a Digital Certificate. It is a file you install on your browser or computer that proves your identity online. Without it, you have to physically visit government offices for things you could handle from your laptop in 10 minutes. For Indian expats, it saves a significant amount of time. 

It is issued by the FNMT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre), which is Spain's national mint and essentially the authority behind official digital identity in the country.

How Do You Get It?

1. Go to the FNMT website and request your certificate using your NIE number. You will receive a request code on your email.
2. Visit any Agencia Tributaria (Tax Agency) office in person with your NIE, TIE, and passport to verify your identity. This physical step cannot be skipped.
3. Return to the FNMT website and download and install the certificate onto your computer.

The whole process takes a few days but the in-person verification is the only part that requires you to leave your house. Make sure you create a proper backup of the certificate on your computer, because if you switch computers or reinstall your browser, you will need to export and reimport it.

Get your NIE sorted as early as possible, even before you land if you can. Then, the moment you arrive, treat the TIE application like your first priority, not something you will get around to eventually. When you're busy finding a house, opening a bank account, and adjusting to a new country all at once, you won't even realise how fast the 30-day window is moving.

To avoid waiting 3 to 4 weeks for your appointments in Madrid or Barcelona, something that frequently happens to most Indian travellers,  book your police appointment the same day you land, or even before you leave India if the portal allows it. Waiting lists are brutal, and that appointment slot is the one thing you cannot rush, no matter how organised you are with everything else.
